Elidel Cream (pimecrolimus) is a macrolactam immunosuppressive medication, used to treat atopic dermatitis, also called eczema. How Elidel Works

Elidel is often compared to a similar topical medication containing tacrolimus. Pimecrolimus, found in Elidel, has lower permeation through the skin, is less likely to cause skin atrophy, and is more selective in what cells it impacts. These are all advantages for patients, though for some tracrolimus produces better results.

Patients who have a genetic condition called Netherton's syndrome or a compromised immune system should not buy Elidel. Patients with viral skin infections should wait until the condition is cleared up before use.

Using Elidel

Elidel comes as a cream, which should be applied directly to the affected skin, wherever it may be; on the face, inside of knees or elbows, the trunk, or anywhere else. It should be applied twice per day.

The cream should not be applied to healthy skin, open wounds, or mucous membranes; if this happens, wash it off immediately. Do not cover Elidel cream with an airtight dressing, and avoid showering, bathing, or swimming for at least an hour after application.

In addition to using Elidel, triggers should be avoided to as great an extent as possible. Common triggers include:

• Sweating
• Sun exposure
• Dry skin
• Allergens in food or the environment
• Irritants, such as soaps or chemicals
• Emotional stress

With respect to dry skin, topical lotions are often applied along with Elidel. If using a moisturizer, apply it at least 30 minutes after Elidel has been applied.

If significant results are not seen within 6 weeks of use, alternative treatments should be considered. It's possible that the condition was misdiagnosed.
